Dehydrated or undernourished skin: What’s the difference?
It’s easy to get these two terms confused, and yet it’s essential to understand your skin type in order to determine what problems it may be experiencing and choose the best products to help it.
When we say that skin is dry or mature, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s dehydrated, but it’s probably undernourished. It will tend to peel or overheat, form wrinkles, become rough in places and get shiny. In addition, it will be very sensitive, because dry skin doesn’t secrete enough oil to form a protective barrier against external aggressors or to retain the water it needs to stay hydrated.
Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, will send you signals in the form of tightness, redness or fine lines. Without water, your skin’s cell renewal will be impeded, your dead skin won’t be sloughed off, your skin won’t regenerate, and its radiance will dim. This can be caused by external aggressors like pollution, dust and cold, to which the skin grows more sensitive as its moisture evaporates, but also by insufficient water intake.
You will need face products that are appropriate for your skin type and that are chosen with care. A moisturising cream won’t meet all the needs of dry skin, nor will dry skin benefit from all its properties. If your skin is sensitive, you will need to pay even closer attention to the moisturising, nourishing product you choose.
Hydration and nutrition: The keys to your beauty regimen
It’s important to differentiate between skin that is thirsty and skin that is hungry. Of course, sometimes in can be both, with one aspect fuelling the other. When the skin’s acid mantle is weakened, the skin reacts. It is crucial for you to moisturise and nourish your skin, because this will help keep it healthy. Healthy skin is radiant skin, with a fresh, glowing complexion. Plus, when your skin is well-nourished and hydrated, it is better able to assimilate the products that you apply to it. So, if you want your beauty regimen to be effective, be sure you don’t skip this step!
Hydration and nutrition: your skin’s well-being depends on these two conditions.
Opt for two-in-one moisturising and nourishing products
Dryness and dehydration are two very common skin issues, which is why many products featured the combined action of several components. This allows them to give your skin everything it needs.
Moisturising products contain water, which is what dehydrated skin needs. That water can be found in various components such as fruit and other plant extracts. Natural ingredients are used to help your skin retain that water, like glycerol, a long-lasting moisturiser with proven efficacy that is extracted from vegetable oil. Hyaluronic acid is also a major ally in this arena. The skin produces it naturally, but not always in large enough quantities, which is why it is incorporated into skincare products. It works to hydrate the skin deep down, revives its radiance and smooths it, producing immediate plumping, moisturising effects.
Nourishing products, on the other hand, are rich in oil. These good lipids, found in creams, oils and butters made from fruit or nuts, vitamins A and E, unsaturated fatty acids and so on are excellent for dry skin!
A combination of these two properties can be extremely effective, because well-hydrated skin is able to absorb skincare products at a deeper level, while well-nourished skin can protect itself and maintain its hydration for longer. The presence of fatty substances in these products prevents the water from evaporating off the surface of the skin.
These products should be chosen based on your skin type, its needs and your preferences. If a lotion doesn’t work for you, you can choose a moisturising cream or serum instead. Once or twice a week, apply a moisturising, nourishing mask as a complement to your daily face care routine.
