What makes skin shiny and uneven?
Shininess, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin), is caused by excessive sebum production. This can cause a variety of inconveniences, like the sensation of your face feeling greasy or oily, a sheen on certain parts of your face, and acne (small pimples and blackheads). Excess sebum clogs the pores, making it hard for the epidermis to breathe and causing these different kinds of reactions, which will vary in degree from one person to the next.
If you don’t take the time to rebalance your sebum production, your skin’s texture will remain uneven, your pores will stay dilated and visible, and your face will look greasy.
Regulating your sebum production
Our skin naturally generates sebum. That’s what builds and reinforces the skin’s barrier (the acid mantle). When not enough sebum is produced or if your skin is very sensitive, it will lose water and become dry and dehydrated.
Several factors can deregulate your sebum production and lead to excessive overproduction, including an unbalanced diet, a hormonal change, stress, etc. Your skin reacts to whatever disrupts it by generating more sebum. Mattifying products are rich in ingredients whose main purpose is to regulate this overproduction, such as zinc, bamboo extract, vitamins B3, C and E, etc.
If your skin tends to be combination to oily, it will be crucial that you adapt your routine to its needs. Be sure to always cleanse your skin thoroughly before applying your treatments, to clear out your pores and optimise the effectiveness of your products.
The importance of choosing the right mattifier
Mattifying, smoothing products may not be suitable for all skin types. If the skin on your face is very sensitive and dry, and only gets shiny in certain localised areas, you will need a mattifier designed for that and then only use it sparingly. Mattifying products can irritate the epidermis and cause it to flake if the formula is too strong. In addition, the epidermis can become accustomed to these products, which will diminish their effects over time. Which is why it’s so vital to select the right one, based on your skin type.
The majority of recommended mattifying products today include some moisturising action in addition to their primary purpose. These face care products promise skin that is perfectly healthy, smooth and plumped, thanks to the incorporation of certain peptides or hyaluronic acid. Mattifying creams are also excellent anti-ageing products, as they smooth visible wrinkles and fine lines, in addition to reducing bumps in the skin.
Smoothing products form a protective shield against external aggressors and are also rich in cell-strengthening antioxidants. In a balm, mask or cream, mattifying and smoothing properties are combined to help the skin rebalance itself and regenerate. Some of these products are even made especially for blemish-prone skin.
